  1. The Shelter Island Country Club opened in 1901. The private course on Shelter Island, Gardiners Bay Country Club opened in 1897. That being said I would definitely recommend this course. It has a lot of unique things about it. Terrain being the first. The blind approach shots always keep me guessing on how well I just did. There's never been a wait to tee off when I've played. There are 6 par 4's and 3 par 3's on this course. You'll love the ninth hole or hate it. Its a 201 yd. par 3 from an elevated tee to an elevated green. The clubs porch is just a few yards behind and above the green. So if you mess up everybody dining on the porch knows it. Don't worry though the diners are protected by a wire mesh covering that side of the porch. Balls hitting the mesh may draw a comment or two upon your arrival to the green. But I guess that's part of the fun. I think that's why a friend of mine refers to the ninth as "The ESPN hole" when he sees' a lot of people on the porch.
