Backyard Golf Green – Natural or Synthetic Putting Surfaces

The old adage, “drive for show but putt for dough,” is proved out by the fact that about 40 percent of your strokes are putts.  If you’re like most golfers, time on the practice green is relegated to a few minutes before your round.  What if you could practice those eight-footers at your leisure, anytime you like?  Enter the backyard putting green.

Perhaps the ultimate ‘toy’ for the avid golfer, a backyard putting surface comes into two general flavors – natural grass and synthetic (or fake) grass.  Each option has their pros and cons with dollar cost generally dictating your choice.  Regardless of which you go choose, you’ll be envy of the entire neighborhood.

Natural (Live) Grass Putting Greens

Pros:

  • Real grass playing conditions
  • Ability to move hole around green
Cons

  • Cost – upfront and going costs
  • Time – maintenance requires a lot of time and effort
  • Susceptible to natural elements – fungus, insects and animals

Synthetic Putting Surface

Pros:

  • Cost – installation and ongoing costs are much less expensive with fake turf putting green
  • Basically maintenance free
  • Consistent conditions
Cons

  • Moving hole location requires major work
  • Not the ‘real’ thing, turf will never be real grass

KWs: Fake grass, turf

Features: Sand Bunkers, Fringe, Water, Tee Boxes & More

Whether you are practicing putting, chipping, pitching or approach shots, backyard greens aren’t one-size-fits-all.  Today’s landscape designers offer a huge array of options. Yet, no matter what type of putting green you install – small, medium or large – it’s important to consider landscaping and other features around the green. These days you can get design just about anything you want – provided you’ve got the room. So…get creative.
