During a recent trip to Lake Tahoe, I had the good fortune to play 18 at Coyote Moon Golf Course in Truckee, CA. If you find yourself in the North Lake Tahoe area, this course is a great way to spend an afternoon. My best advice before playing….bring extra golf balls – you’re gonna lose a few.
At $140 for greens fee, this club offers a true private course feel. The views are spectacular in spots and the scent of pine needles is ever present. Carts at Coyote Moon are stocked with water and hand towels. The fairways are impeccably maintained and the greens roll super fast. One thing this golf course lacks is a proper driving range – only four sorry looking mats and a net. However, the chipping and putting practice area are fantastic.
Coyote Moon is long, almost 7,200 yards from the back tees. Some of the length is mitigated by the course’s elevation, around 6,000 feet above sea level. I was hitting at least one club length longer than my usual yardage. You’ll need all the extra help as more than a few tee shots will require you to carry some unplayable ground. To say this property is rolling is a serious understatement. You’ll need every shot in your bag to score well here. Playing time was reasonable, our Saturday morning tee time allowed us to finish our round in about 4 1/2 hours.
All in all, if you have the time (and money), Coyote Moon is worth checking out. A hat tip to MS, DK and DC – it was a pleasure taking your money.
