For the 6th year in a row now, Bethpage State Park Golf Course has been voted as the Best Golf Course on Long Island. The poll held by the Long Island Press and backed by the Bethpage Credit Union once again found the top choice of Long Islanders to be Bethpage Black, which is not only one of the top public courses on the Island, but the country as well. Bethpage Black is one of the more challenging courses on the Island and is slated to hold the PGA Tour Barclay’s tournament in 2021 and 2027. A course that’s a must for every golfer’s bucket list of courses to play (check out 50 Places To Play Golf Before You Die available at Amazon for a reasonable price of $18.70, for more courses to add to your increasingly growing list. It makes a great present too), but steel yourself to be there at least a few hours before you expect to play to actually get a tee-off – one of the downsides of great public courses unfortunately.
According to Jacqueline Faldetta, a junior who plays for Hofstra’s division I women’s golf team, Black is definitely the best course on Long Island without a shadow of a doubt.
“Black (Bethpage) is iconic. On that course, you have to be smart about which shots you hit, there’s a lot of risk-reward opportunities out there.”
Faldetta claims that the 4th hole – a grizzly Par 5 – is by far her favorite with its undulating uphill walk and breathtaking beauty, despite its high difficulty level.
However, Friar’s Head – a private course on the island comes in a close second for her.
“Aside from the course itself, the views are spectacular. The 9th hole goes towards the clubhouse – which is amazing from an architectural standpoint – and has ocean views beyond it.”
One of Faldetta’s fond memories of the course is the view that’s visible only by taking a bridge between holes 15 and 16, which goes right to the edge of a cliff over the ocean.”
